Domestic Violence Shelter and Services
for Abused Women and Their Children

Children's Program

In the Laurel House Children's Program, three full-time child advocates work with the children and their mothers, both in shelter and in the Bridge Housing Program, to address the issues related to children witnessing or experiencing domestic violence.

 70% of children who live in homes where there is domestic violence are also abused

 65% of children who witness violence in the home enter into abusive teen and adult relationships

 10% of high school students have experienced physical violence in a dating relationship

 Children in homes where domestic violence occurs are physically abused or seriously neglected at a rate 15% higher than the national average of cases reported in the general population (National Victim Center, 1993)
